There are the 3 common penalties for violent crime.

1 Execution

Execution has been a subject of debate throughout history with the debate being about whether it violates the human right to life. In the modern era, executions have been quite rare and in the situations where it’s handed in as a penalty for a violent crime, it involved a perpetrator who commits serious violent crimes on multiple victims and shows no remorse for their crimes.

2 Prison

Most perpetrators found guilty of committing a violent crime will be handed a prison sentence. The length of the sentence is often dependent on the severity of the crime. Perpetrators of very serious crimes get life sentences, whereas others will get between 10 and 50 years depending on the number of victims, degree of harm they caused and nature of the crime.

3 Fines

Fines are often imposed for violent crimes that are not deemed as too serious and have been committed by first time offenders. Crimes such as assault may be punishable through fines as the money mainly paid by the perpetrator to the victim of the crime to offset both their legal costs and damages resulting from the crime.

There are of course a number of other penalties but these three are the most imposed. Generally, penalties such as prison sentences are not only meant to punish and isolate perpetrators of violent crimes but also give them an opportunity for rehabilitation.
